CommentaryThe 101 (City of London) Engineer Regiment, originally formed as the 1st Middlesex Volunteer Engineers in 1860, played a significant role in the British Army, particularly during the period from 1945 to 1967. Initially, it served as part of various divisions, including the 47th (1/2nd London) Division and the 56th (London) Division, during both World Wars. After World War II, the regiment continued its service and was redesignated as 101 (London) Corps Engineer Regiment in 1961. Post-War History (1945-1961): 1945-1947: The regiment, initially as part of the 1st London/56th Division RE, continued its role in providing engineering support to various units. 1947: It was redesignated as 101 Field Engineer Regiment (Chelsea). 1961: It underwent a reduction in establishment and was renamed 101 (London) Corps Engineer Regiment. Transformation and Disbandment (1961-1967): 1961-1967: The regiment saw further changes, including a reduction in its establishment and the re-designation to 101 (London) Corps Engineer Regiment. 1967: The regiment was converted to infantry, forming C Company of the 10th Battalion The Queen's Regiment. 1968: It later became B Company of the London Yeomanry. 1969: Further changes led to the regiment's eventual disbandment in 1969. |
