We visit the Madras War Memorial in India

On the 20th Feb 2026, Mercedes Ferrari-Plumridge (an association member, who formerly served with the Regiment) made a visit to the Madras War Cemetery, Chennai, Madras.

While there she and her daughter Eve placed an Association Cross and a photo of 550263 Serjeant Leonard Alfred Cole Royal Engineers at the Madras 1914-1918 War Memorial.

Leonard is named in the 1st Middlesex Volunteer Engineers Roll of Honour. Leonard was the son of Alfred Ernest and Annie Maria Cole, both originally from the Brighton area of Sussex. Leonard was born on the 21st August 1881 in St Pancras, London where the family had moved to. He enlisted into the 2nd (London) Division Engineers at the Duke of York Barracks, Chelsea in 1915. He was attached to the 81st Pioneers, Base Depot Madras, Indian Army, he died 12th October 1918 from disease aged 27.

Members of this Association continue to visit the graves and memorials of those named in the Roll of Honour, to pay their respects on behalf of all members if this Association.

They are not just names from a distant past on a slab of stone, they are Remembered and not forgotten.
